The donor coordination meeting coupled with the field visit has been organized on 16th June 2023 at Galle under the project “Marine Litter and Microplastics (NORAD1)” implemented by BRS Secretariat, Institute for Global Environment Strategies (IGES) and HELP-O. The participants for this meeting were government officials including Secretary – (MoE), Additional Secretary – (MoE), District Secretary – Galle, Director General - CEA and senior project staff of different funding and implementing agencies. 

The objective of the meeting was to present the National Action Plan of Plastic Waste Management 2021-2030 (NAPPWM) and the government strategy to be used in future for the effective management of plastic waste. Various funding agencies shared their views related to plastic waste management in Sri Lanka.

The field visit was to show the progress made by the pilot activities carried out under the NORAD1 project under the theme of “Making Galle City Plastic Waste Free”. This was an opportunity for funding agencies to see the progress of the pilot studies and explore the possibility of funding for these pilots when they are scaled up to national level.

Following events were covered during the field visit,

  • Prize giving event for the winners of the video competition among school children carried out by IGES and HELP-O at Dangedara Jayawardena College.
  • Opening of CCTV to capture and record data of waste flowing across the “Moda Ala”, Havelock Road, Galle
  • Visiting the fishing net collection at Fisheries harbor, Galle
  • Alternatives for Single Use Plastic and microplastic filter at Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel, Galle
