The Seventh Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 7) is being held in Nairobi, Kenya from 8th to 12th December 2025, with Sri Lanka represented by a delegation comprising senior officials of Ministry of Environment the Secretary Mr. K.R. Uduwawala, Additional Secretary Mrs. W.G. Kumaragama and Director Ms. Kulani H.W. Karunarathne, and Actg. High Commissioner, Sri Lanka High Commission in Nairobi and the Deputy Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN Habitat Ms. Ruvini S. De Silva.
Due to national commitments arose from the impacts of Cyclone Dhitwa, the Hon. Minister of Environment Dr. Dammika Patabendi was unable to attend the session. Representing the Minister, the delegation will continue Sri Lanka’s engagement and present the country’s positions at UNEA 7.
Sri Lanka’s National Statement will express sincere gratitude to Member States for the support extended to the country, and will call for strengthened global action, especially on behalf of vulnerable nations facing the severe impacts of climate change and the escalating global environmental crisis. During this conference, Sri Lanka also presented its draft resolution on “Enhancing Meaningful Participation of Children and Youth in the Environmental Governance” alongside fifteen other resolutions submitted by other member states.
The delegation will participate in and share insights at several side events, focusing on themes including Ocean governance, Youth engagement and biodiversity, Turbocharging multilateral environmental agreements, The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the 30×30 targets.
Highlighting the significance of UNEA 7’s overarching theme: “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet”, Sri Lanka remains committed to contributing constructively to global environmental discussions and to sharing national experiences, reflections, and best practices throughout UNEA 7.
