The Biodiversity Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment is pleased to announce the successful completion of an awareness workshop focused on promoting awareness about The National Red List 2020 – Conservation Status of the Flora of Sri Lanka. The workshop took place on 22nd March 2024 at the Education Centre of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya and it aimed at fostering understanding and practical approach of the conservation status of Sri Lanka's diverse flora.

This event hosted by the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the National Herbarium of the Department of National Botanic Gardens, aimed to highlight the importance of the National Red List 2020 findings in guiding conservation efforts and policy-making processes. Participants, including environmentalists, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, engaged in insightful discussions, interactive sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities throughout the workshop. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas, fostering collaborations to enhance conservation efforts across the country.

Key highlights of the workshop included presentations by experts in the field, showcasing the significance of The National Red List 2020 findings, and exploring strategies for effective conservation action. During the workshop, it was revealed that 48.4% of endemic floral species in Sri Lanka are under threat. Particularly concerning is the fact that a significant portion of these endangered species primarily inhabit the wet zone, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts in these regions.

The workshop underscored the Biodiversity Secretariat's commitment to promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental practices in Sri Lanka. By raising awareness and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, we aim to drive meaningful action towards the preservation of our precious flora and ecosystems.
